when i got my first bass, i only played with fingers and i noticed my bass's tone had this natural slightly distorted punch to it's tone. it's a yamaha RBX170. also, dial up your lows, that seemed to help as well. now i play with a pick alot so it doesn't sound like that...i don't really desire to have it sound like that anymore either.

Yup. The dude from Municipal Waste is most definitely using a MM. Every time I pick one up, I always try to play this:

when i saw them in december he was playing a geddy and using a sansamp BDDI

Main things are a pick and roundwounds. Med to low action, fretbuzz is your friend but not too much. A sansamp bddi will also give you a nice overdrive if desired but really not all that necessary.
