Heil PR40 Micing

Could someone recommend the best way to mic with a heil pr40? I'm trying to mic my GK neo410. I have the terrible tweeter all the way off. Going for a jesuslizard/shellac sound. I find im getting not enough bass and too much clank. I saw something about the mic being bidirectional, should I be micing it at a 90 degree angle or something?

Where you are getting this side info? There is no angle, it's an end firing mic. Meaning you need the end pointing directly at whatever you're micing. It doesn't pick up sound from the sides. Check out the product sheet...all the way at the bottom:

As for distance, you need to experiment. I'd say that anywhere from 0-12" away from the grill is fairly standard.

Hi.

I don't have a PR40, so I can't give an exact way to use it, but I'd start with the same orientation as I use with any other mic when miking a cabinet/speaker.

With the mic at a small angle in relation to the cone, I point the the mic at the junction of the dustcap and the cone on the relatively small dustcaps, and to the side of the dustcap on the speakers with a larger one.

Trying to mic a regular speaker in a way that the cl of the mic and the cl of the speaker motor are in the same plane, ie. the mic points directly at the dustcap is usually a bad idea. It only takes a few trial runs to notce it though, so no biggie.

Sam
