Just joined the forum, been playing guitar for decades, and recently started dabbling with the bass as my original duo has been slowly expanding to a 5-piece band, and one of the other guitar players and I began fooling around playing bass.
A few weeks ago, a friend told me about someone he knew who had a large (100+) collection of basses, was moving and wanting to sell off some of his collection. He and I went over to have a look, with me swearing I would NOT be buying anything, I'm a bass beginner, and had no need for anything beyond the old Squier Precision I'd been playing. Well OF COURSE he had some very cool basses, and OF COURSE I fell in love with a couple of them, and OF COURSE he offered me a deal on a couple of them that I simply couldn't pass up. So a Rick Turner RB4 Fretless (!) and a Sting signature Pbass came home in my trunk.
Funny story about the fretless, I had no idea it was fretless as was playing it, the fret markers look like fret wire. As a relative beginner, I would have been terrified of a fretless, but I was having a lot of fun with it, and it was only when I slid a note up that I realized what it was! It's such a unique sound, and such a gorgeous instrument.
I'm not usually one for signature models, but the Sting bass just felt so good in my hands, and sounded SO much better than my Squier on the lower notes (I think it's the pickup), it really impressed me.
Anyway, in an instant I've become serious about improving my bass chops and getting some real training.
