Hello from Lafayette, Louisiana!

Hello, everyone!

I am 43 years old & have been playing music since 8th grade. Don't read music, don't play covers note for note, but I have consistently been told I have a great ear.

I recently became absolutely enamored by the bass guitar. On electric, I've always twanged even when fuzzing in keeping with my North Louisiana roots though the music down here in Lafayette is awesome & I am pleased to be consistently networking with successful & professional musicians.

My bass tone I want is different though, I am finding. I want that "One Life to Live" Manhattans tone.

Gear: Squier Bronco through a completely badass Fender Rumble (the 100 watt, sweet Jesus, rattle the windows.)

Strings: I had DR Black Beauties on there. But I just got some D'Addario flatwounds which will help. I also found that R. Baker, bass guy who tore it up with the Philly Sound, used masking tape around his strings. I want to do this except use electrical tape. The reason why, haha, is because I wear all black & my bass is black. If I switch to silver strings, I want the black for continuity. Besides a casual sweep through here let me know that others are doing it.

Right hand: I have a thick rubber one that I like. I really like to use my thumb for a round tone. But I'm going to get used to the index-middle finger thing whilst out on semester break.

Pickups: I want upgrade & am considering a Lace Sensor Red, but that might not get the washtubby tone I really want.

I used to ride motorcycles hardcore for years & would buy Harley Sportsters & customize them. Not only was this badass, but I ended up with an inexpensive platform that was just how I wanted it.

Advice on pickups, strings, capacitators would all be appreciated.

I look forward to hanging with all you guys & gals (so crushin' on Kim Deal, ha ha ha) when I am supposed to be at my dayjob.

Respects,
Dr. Dan.

Welcome to TalkBass!!!!

So..... just to make sure I get this straight.....

You want a Louisiana tone just like that Philly sound guy and the guy from the Manhattans????

:D

Ha ha ha. "I contain multitudes'-Whitman. My six-string tone is called Dr. Dan's Funky Chicken guitar tone. I play both instruments like my aunt, whose left hand on that piano had the Holy Ghost, albeit in the Baptist church.

Try some black tape wound strings.

Ha ha ha. What about Black Diamonds:

ELECTRIC BASS BLACK COATED NICKEL

Could deaden to mitigate the nasty brightness, ha ha ha, of the nickel while looking cool.

All the oldass people from home swore by them because this was pre Ernie Ball which seemed to be the next guitar string of choice. Apparently nothing else was available.

I just bought some D'Addario light flats which my local trusted non-chain local music place recommended over La'Bella Deep Talkin' once I mentioned what I was after. Will surely try different ones.

And get my butt over to the Rumble section.

Any suggestions about that pickup replacement appreciated.

I think y'all understand that I want tubby, almost upright bass tone without slappage & long as I want sustain. Warm, nice, loud basic tone.

Thanks again. Glad to be here.
