After a few decades of playing guitar, drums and piano, I'm finally taking up the bass!
An instrument that, in my opinion, will synthesize everything I love about my other instruments!

Any idea what type of bass you're going to try? With that background, I would grab a nice 5 string fretless, and start there. May not be the easiest path, but it could take you a long way, and if you can play fretless you can play fretted. The reverse is not true.

Welcome! Coming from guitar, I would not recommend starting on a fretless bass. Get a solid 4-string fretted bass and get after it!

All I'm saying is, with an extensive musical background, better to go to a platform that will afford more room for growth and musical range. I don't see where "coming from guitar" has much to do with it. He also comes from piano and drums. Guitar has 6 strings and OP should be familiar with chords and double stops and would benefit from the 5 string. Range much more similar to a guitar. Why not learn those shifts from the start? Fretless, yeah, I threw that out there. Why not, but perhaps not.

OP, now you can see what TB is about. We express our opinions, and many do not agree, which is good. Differing opinions is the spice of life. No two of us look at the instrument exactly the same way, and sometimes (more often than not) we respectfully disagree.
