I am working on a project and am having problems and I am hoping someone here can help.
I am converting a 4 string to a 5 string. I am now on the hunt for a 5 string nut with a 1-1/2 width.. I have been looking for a while. I do not want to pay $50 for one. Just not worth putting a $50 nut on a $100 bass.
I also do not know how to cut a nut, I do not have the tools to cut a nut and I am not having any luck finding a non-fender style flat bottom nut blank for my Chinese bass.
Can someone here offer either some advise other than make my own? Something that is not $50 either..
I appreciate any offerings, please and thank you

Oh - side note - Warmoth will do them, but only if they have the neck first and they are around $50. My local luthier will do it, for $50, but he also want's to reset the neck and the bridge to make it "perfect" which would be great, but I don't want to then spend $200 on my $100 bass

CA = super glue like "crazy glue". Use masking tape make a "dam" on both sides of the old nut, then pour baking soda in the old grooves and let a drop of CA glue to complete the job. When the glue hardens it will be like a nut blank and you can file new grooves. There are inexpensive needle files around. For example:

I have used the CA glue and baking soda in the past as a filler in nuts (to make slight adjustments), but I tend to think that filling all of the nut slots and starting over will not provide much strength, and that it would be overall easier to start with a new nut blank and will only add about $5 in expense. Here's where I buy my parts: http://www.guitarnucleus.com/gnstore/nuts.html
