Help: 5 string with narrow string spacing

Need some help here. Being completely unsatisfied with my Ibanez SR505, I need another 5 string. Can anyone recommend another 5 string with relatively narrow string spacing and thin neck profile?

I know that the SR 505 is THE smallest 5 string neck out there, so I'm probably not going to come close. The closest I have come is a Modulus Q 5, what with its fairly thin neck profile.

+1 for the Q5. The Music Man 5 string also has narrow bridge spacing, and a relatively flat, small neck in general for a 5. The Parker Fly bass is also very small and tight.

Depending on how your hands like Warwicks, they have exceedingly small string spacing on their fives. Their necks can be a bit thick and the first fret can feel far away for some, but the string spacing is 16.5mm. Very narrow.

I have a Sadowsky MS5 and a Musicman SR5 but used to own an Ibanez 5er. The Sadowsky is about as wide as a 5er neck gets, the Ibanez as thin as it gets and the SR5 is right in the middle.

I have very small hands and have no problem playing the SR5. It is almost always a heavy bass though. If you are used to 7-8lbs, you aren't going to like a 10-11lb SR5 likely.

What you need is a Sterling 5.

The neck profile is a little smaller than a Stingray 5 and is also a little lighter in weight.

What exactly did you not like about the Ibanez?

What you need is

... to play a bunch of basses!

We all have our favorites but there are many basses with 16.5/17.5mm spacing out there and you need to find your own favorite.

Spector isn't one of my favorite basses but many absolutely love the slim necks of their 5ers. To each their own.

You will likely get every brand named on this thread and we all have our own opinions (as above, I like SR5's). Spend a few hours at a GC and play a bunch of basses.

Steinberger XL5N

They took the original 4 string Steinberger body & neck and machined a nut and bridge to fit the width - narrowest 5 string spacing I've ever found.

You know, I played a Warwick standard corvette 5 string for about an hour today, and I have to say that on second thought, I can definitely get used to that neck. String spacing is perfect for me.

$1,100 at GC? That's a nice price man.

Ibanez Roadstar 5 string from '85-'86. They took a Roadstar 4 string neck and body, changed the headstock and bridge, and it's a 5 string. They're rare, but they have really skinny necks. Very similar to what ric stave is talking about with the Steinberger.

Carvin. Their standard profile is 17mm spacing, and the ebony fretboards are to die for. Pick one up used, and if you don't like the electronics, it's no big deal to swap them out. The LB75 series in Alder are light, balance well, and are a joy to play.

What is it about the SR505 you don't like? If it's just the tone, try something like an SRX695. Sounds different but plays about the same.
