I’m wanting to have the ability to record some bass tracks onto existing gospel and other bass tracks mainly for fun. What would be a cheap way to get started and how do you do it?

Help a TB’er with simple at home recording

1) Personal computer of your choice, laptop or desktop, Windows or Apple.
2)Then you'll need a USB recording interface, a decent quality one with two mic inputs is about $100, but you can get something more basic for as little as $40.
3)"Digital Audio Workstation" software to run on your selected computer. The starter programs everyone recommends are Audacity (free) and Reaper (free trial, $60 to buy).
I would record or import your 'play along' tracks into the software, and then use a second track to record your bass parts to.
Take time to read the manuals for your software and hardware! Watch some tutorials on your software on YouTube. There can be a steep learning curve with computer recording, so be patient with yourself, what seems to be awkward and difficult at first will get easier as you learn and practice. Just like learning music.

can also be done in a very light manner using a basic interface ($39 - infinity) into an iPad and the free Garage Band app. Load your play along track into Garage Band, add your bass track.
fun stuff. Crater's advice to read the manuals is spot on ... its not hard, but its not always totally intuitive to the uninitiated.
come on back here for advice/guidance if you hit any snags. Lots of your fellow bass players are doing very similar stuff right now so there is lots of experienced help to be had.
