[HELP] Amp speaker replacement

Hi,

Firts of all thanks for existing, have landed on this forum many times before looking for answers on which cab to buy or doing research on people setups. And today I'm here looking for help. It's my first post, hopefuly I'm doing this right.

A friend of mine invited me to jam, as I was playing through a Peavey TNT 115s the thing suddenly stopped working. It was still on but produced no sound or hum, nothing. My brother who is much more versed in electronics tested the amp with a known working speaker and everything works just fine.

We've been doing some research on speaker replacements for this amp but can't find the adequate one.

The amp's owner found two speakers online and asked if any of them might work. I know they aren't bass amp speakers, but he doesn't mind.

So here I am, asking for your advice: would any of these work? Is there any way to know if the sound quality is any good? Which one should we buy?

Yikes, I'd pass on those drivers linked. "Optimized for all musical instruments, DJ and car audio".... Nope. Three totally different monsters there, no driver does all 3 well. Also though I didn't see detailed specs of the 500 watt model, the 88dB sensitivity of the 250 watt model would be the deal breaker for me there. There are MI 10's with more SPL.

Try U.S. Speaker if Peavey themselves has no suggestions, which I doubt. PV should be your first point of contact for info. They (at least used to be) are very good with helping out to get folks info on older models.

my peavey TNT 115 (now disassembled) used a peavey scorpion speaker (IIRC), but a black widow would also work (better, IMO). FWIW: i also used a JBL E-140 in that box for a while and it was great sounding with that driver, too. that box is so generic --- lots of things might work, but i'd stay away from the choices you listed and go for something more 'bass (instrument) specific'. good luck with your speaker replacement!

Poor choice, they are low sensitivity woofers with very little mid output. Also, beware that the power handling is not based on "RMS" power and IME overstated significantly.

Where are you located? The recommendations vary on your location.

The 115s was the sheffield version. ( cheaper stamp steel basket, small magnet)
The 115BW would have the upgrade Black Widow ( heavy duty cast frame, large magnet)
same combo same amp, just the Black Widow was the upgrade.

So if you wanted to replace with the upgrade factory black widow.
be a Ebay find or local seller used
Black Widow 1501DT4 4 ohm
Black Widow 1505DT4 4 ohm
Black Widow 1502DT8 could work 8 ohm

a cheaper equivalent to the stamp steel sheffield

Peavey Sheffield Pro 1500+ 8 ohms

for 4 ohm driver stamp steel similar to a factory Sheffield 4 ohm would be

Eminence Kappa 15C

"Eminence Kappa-15C 15" Driver 4 Ohm" from www.parts-express.com!

for a much much better 4 ohm
I would hunt down a 4 ohm Black Widow
1501DT-4
1505DT-4

Thanks for all the replies. I'm in Spain at the moment, so anything shipping from the States might be hard to get.

Been searching online (Amazon mostly) for an official replacement but haven't had any luck. That's why were currently looking for alternatives for the replacement, not necessarily a top of the line speaker. I know I can't get a good tone without spending much money, but the owner doesn't mind.

Is there any known generic speaker replacement for this kind of amps?

Again, thanks for all the replies.

That would be a good choice, be sure that if your amp has an extension speaker jack that you get the 8 ohm version though.

I would double-check that cabinet tuning to the driver, it may be close enough, but it's a good idea to check.
