I recently bought a used KUSTOM KBA100X 100W 15" Bass amp.
I have this problem, where there's a slightly distorted sound when i use flat EQ settings.
first i thought its a gain\volume thing. tried tweaking the gain and volume knobs and the distortion is still there. then i tried taking off some lows and low mids, still no success. the same problem persists in very low volumes too.
finally i found the root of the problem. only way to make the distortion go away is to turn the two treble knobs (i guess we can call them hi and hi-mids - theit titles say 2K&5K) down to almost 0. if i turn it up any more then that - i get this annoying background distortion when i play a note. its not exactly distortion as the note itself sound clean - just together with this background hiss\muddy annoying noise similiar to white noise. like a "dirty" sound .
this happens all over the fingerboard, from the lowest open E all the way up to the last fret of the G string.
already ruled out possibilities for problem in the guitar or cables and such. every other config' i tried causes the problem (different guitar, different cable, different wall outlet etc. ) - im 100% sure it comes from this specific amp. same setup through a different amp gives a clean sound. even with treble open all the way.
checked the speaker cone for crackles and seems like its in good shape.
also used contact cleaner on all the knobs and jacks of the amp. still there.
of course i can always just turn the treble down but i would prefer being able to use different EQ settings and i think im not asking for too much - just being able to use the amp with a Flat EQ.
an electrician tech checked it out fot me (not an amp\sound specialist, just a general proffessional handyman) and said that all the capacitors and resistors look like theyr'e in good shape..
Any possible solutions to this? anyone came across such problem? is it possible that this is just the way this amp works? maybe its something about the electronics of the amp? or maybe its something in the electronics that takes an amp pro to check? i would love to get further diagnosis advices as my area is very short of amp techs.
some guy said that it might be one of the amp chips in the circuit might be defective. anybody thinks it might be something in that direction?
