HELP! Can't decide on body wood (pick the one you like!)

Which wood / option to choose:

  • All mahogany solid body

    Votes: 11 22.9%
  • Semi-hollow mahogany body with flamed maple top and sound holes

    Votes: 23 47.9%
  • Same as option 2, but with a kind of laminated center (maple, wenge and mahogany)

    Votes: 14 29.2%

I'm at the part of sourcing wood for my current build, but I still cannot decide which option to go for.. I am thinking about this for a week or two and I need some help with this decision :hyper:.

I made a nice mock-up to go with the poll:

Tell me what you think!

Thanks! Seems there's a favorite among those options.. at first, I liked the 3rd one the most, but I guess I'm changing my mind.. the 2nd one is a bit cleaner and the maple shows better. Still not made up my mind, but I soon will (going to order the wood in a few days).

Mahogany sounds awesome, but im building a solid one at the moment and it's damn heavy.
Personally I wouldnt take on a semi-hollow guitar, however it does look awesome (and i suck with a router!)
But go for what you want, because at the end of the day, you want a bass that your satisfied and proud of.
Otherwise, whats the point in making it?

Yeah, good one there, I guess that's another vote for the semi-hollow options.

Good point again :smug:

BTW, how did you do the mock ups? They look kinda awesome.

Photoshop.. scanned drawings with masks of wood and parts found on the internet.. (I've got many years of Photoshop experience as a software engineer.. and this are only mock-ups :D)

Damn, I suck at using photoshop (but I have it and never use it for some reason... don't ask..)
But your right on the semi-hollow option, but how will you make it.
You've inspired me for another build already :P

That's always a good thing isn't it?

I'll go for the semi-hollow option and not a hollow bodied one. So I will route a cavity into the lower body part and a soundhole in the top and then glue things together..

Nice :)... what kind of pickup? That's one thing I haven't figured out, I've got two J-pickups and know the dimensions of it, but how do you determine the cavity for it?

Btw: Stewmac sells routed pickup templates, but I don't feel like ordering those because I live in the Netherlands and for such a small product I find it a bit too expensive.

Musicman (copy, im on a tight budget!)
which is annoying because i was thinking of splitting it.
And maybe later a p-bass pickup?
Yeah i live in england, but i just made my own template out of 3mm mdf (ply works better) and just drill a hole, and put the scroll saw blade through it.
I actually chose the humbucker because i though it would be easy to rout.
Im really lazy :P
