Help choosing a new Precision

Well you might be well on the way now you have the new black pickguard. I was never much of a fan of the black-with-white-pickguard look, just couldn't get on with it, but the "all-black" look is something else entirely.

Nice. I nearly went for that one myself but was lured by a Blue Dawn one that the folks at Bass Central had in stock. But that is a really attractive looking thing you've chosen there. I think that my only nitpick is that, although I've said I'm a big fan of white pearloid pickguards, my personal preference for that colour finish would be black. But who am I to argue with such a fine looking bass?

Various things are trying to hamper my Precision purchase, but I'm still trying to get there! I finally got a chance to visit the music shop today; they're a little short of Precisions but the three that they had all handled quite nicely (they seem a pretty good bunch at Oxford's amusingly named PMT, I guess they might check out the stuff they get in to weed out the lemons [curiously mixed metaphor, that one]). None really appealed to me, though, mainly because I've finally decided I want maple after all and they were all rosewood (in fact I think all their other basses were rosewood as well, except for a Sting P; somebody there obviously has a rosewood fetish ). The metallic grey Fender Mex looked and played quite nice but lacked the snob-value of the USA, and the black Fender USA also seemed quite good but I just can't make myself like black basses for some reason. I was almost tempted by the Fender 50th Anniversary but at over a grand it'd have to be exactly what I wanted and being rosewood, it wasn't. Gorgeous looking thing, though.

So I've asked them to order a "sensibly red" one for me with a maple fretboard, hopefully they'll have it within a couple of weeks so I can faff about with it and maybe conclude my Precision lust once and for all!

If you're looking for a solid player and aren't worried about the name on the headstock, you owe it to yourself to check out the Lakland Skyline Glaub. Of course feel is subjective, but I think it blows the MIA Fender out of the water. It just "feels" to be of a higher quality. Price is competitive with USA Fender models.

At least check it out.

I like the look of them. On this occasion, though, it has to say "Fender" on it. Besides, the Skylines seem to be at least a couple of hundred quid more: that said, the next expression of my GAS (I wish my bass playing could keep up, I think I'd be more accurately described as a "bass collector" the way things are going!) might well be for a more "boutique" oriented model. The Laklands look nice, as do the GB Guitars offerings, and about half a dozen others... not something I should be thinking about right now!

It's not just you, I think it is indeed compulsory. But in my case I already have a 3-tone sunburst P clone and don't want an identical-looking bass, even if the new one will actually be the real thing! I like the way you said "your first P bass".

Actually the Columbus has a quite funny-shaped sunburst as it doesn't include the "forearm dent remover" (whatever's the proper name for the contoured bit above the bridge). I must get a digital camera together at some point, I'm hopeless at explaining this sort of stuff.
