Help finding a good bass

Hello, my fiancé is just starting as a bass player in a band, they do mostly rock and metal. He is pretty new to bass and he has been using his friends to play but I'd like to buy him his own. I don't really know anything about bass and I was looking for a some suggestions on what to buy him. He's a smaller guy so he likes smaller instruments to make him look bigger, he prefers a 5 string, I'm on an EMT salary right now, so preferably on the more cost effective end, I know he said he wants frets and he doesn't really have a preference of style or color.
Any suggestions on which ones I should look at?

Check your local Craigslist or Facebook Market Place. When you find something in your price range, then go to Google and do a review evaluation of that bass guitar.

In this day and age, it much, much easier to find a good bass than a bad bass.

Ya like to shop on line...................

I suggest checking FB marketplace and running stuff in your price range by us here. If not, then short scale basses are very popular. They're a little bit smaller. A lot of people play them now. This one is a good choice at a very nice price. I don't know anyone that doesn't like their Talman.
