Help finding my Fender Jazz's "birth" year

I bought a used Fender Jazz, and do not know what year it was made in.

It is made in Japan, and the serial number starts with E85.

I recall reading somewhere that with Fenders, the first two numbers of the serial number are the year in which he bass was made.

Is this accurate? If not, how can I determine the year my bass was "born" in?
