Help! I need 80's synth sound...

I can get pretty believable synth sounds with a gated fuzz into an envelope filter. A little chorus helps too.

You're looking for that wonderfull 80s percussive synth bass sound. With the EHX Bass Micro Synth you can nail that sound (ok, with an actual synth you can nail it 100%...), just add some chorus. Resonance on a quarter, start freq 50-75%, stop freq 10-25%, rate 0-50%, lots of octave down or guitar and a little square wave or octave up.

After spending a ridiculous amount of money trying to make my bass sound like an analog synth, I finally broke down and bought a Novation Bass Station. It is simple, monophonic, and far less expensive than the array of pedals needed to cover 75% of your target sound. It may be hard to bite the bullet and play the sounds from a keyboard, but if the tone is truly important, nothing comes close. The NBS is super easy to use, and doesn't require a background or training on keys.

Sure, you can buy a key bass, and that's its own bit of fun. I'd like to have a key bass such as the Fender Rhodes, a Moog Sub-Phatty and a few other Key Basses... I plan on getting a simple keyboard bass synth of some kind in the next year or so, but...

I'd still like to have fun chasing synthy bass sounds on a bass, bowing my upright through a bunch of pedals is fun. I'm not in it for the money.

+1 Nigel played clean, just lots of studio compression on that track. Killer player. Lots of those early 80s bands had great live rhythm sections. The tone on that Get Into The Groove clip is deadly good. Makes me wish I hadn't sold the MHX pedal. I had bought it as a possible octave, but it never made me happy in that roll. I sure had fun with it when we had to play Flashlight for a wedding, though. Adding a Synth Wah in the chain it was flat out disgusting.

well, jumping forward 3 years since last comment (wow, almost exactly 3 years), i would suggest the Zoom B3n. A band I'm about to join in a couple of weeks wants me to play Talking in your sleep, so i came up with a patch using a combination of Stereo Chorus, ZNR and Defret. i tried using Envelope but it missed the lower end of the sound (lots of treble and mids).
I just happen to notice i have my unit besides me, so I'll post the pictures with the parameters in the next comment.
If anybody uses the same pedal please let me know if you have dialed in a closer sound for the bass line. Thanks
