Double Bass help identify this bass

Hi guys,
i'm a newbie to DB anyway after much looking around i came across this used bass at a local lutheir, apparently it is Czech made and about 20-30 years old, no label inside though. I think its a carved top, i AB'd it against a chinese made Hofner brand which has a solid pressed top and its much thicker which makes me think its carved. I think the sound is good its very percussive sounding, (probably all DB are) anyway i paid AUD$1500.00 for it its had a new bridge fitted with adjusters a fingerboard plane and a new set of spirocores. I think its a good deal although the action might be a bit high i measured the g string and it looks like about 7 mm off the end of the FB. Any more info on this bass would be great

From the shape, color and the neck button, it could be a Musima from Machnikurchen (sp), south (formerly East) Germany, near the Czech border. But if your guy says its Czech then I believe Luby would be most likely.

Yep I had a Meinel/Musima just like that. Not a bad instrument at all.

How did your lesson with Geoff go? Best to let Geoff sort you out on what your setup should be.

My guess is though that Geoff will want you to start with string height at the end of the fingerboard at 8mm (E), 7mm (A), 6mm (D) and 5mm (G). The fingerboard should be as flat as possible without buzzing. String clearance at nut should be very low (business card thickness).

From my recent experience with John Ferwerda, I gave him the above specifications (explaining that Geoff was my teacher) and he got the setup spot on the first time.

Makes a huge difference to the learnig experience to have a well set up bass to begin with. Couldn't have been happier.
