Help identifying a bass

Looks like your basic custom one-off.

Without a certificate, letter, or something similar from the builder or a previous owner (like Sting perhaps?) it’d be extremely difficult or impossible to establish provenance for it.

the strap pin receptacles do make it look like it would hang almost vertically suspended from the player's body.

This is not a bad idea. Im sure he signs a zillion things, but a bassist might remember signing this... thing

It might help move it if you could include an email from Sting confirming the signature.

I don't think anyone has asked, how does it sound? In theory a bass, no matter how strange, is supposed to make nice deep noises.

There was a very talented repair guy/guitar builder named Woody Phifer who used to have a shop in Haverstraw, NY and is now in Saugerties, last I heard. He built something like this many years ago. I believe he called it a "Bassolin". Couldn't find any images of it on Google.

i just happened to remember there was a picture of the thing in the 1994 guitar blue book.. I don't remember why someone gave me the book but it is useful for odd stuff made up to the early 90s
