Help in rewiring my Aria P J bass!

Hi guys,

I've started rewiring my PJ Aria bass after having it resprayed. I followed the schematics found on the seymour duncan website ([Invalid or Expired Link Removed]) and all went ok apart from the following: the schematics show only 2 soldering points for each pickup (white and black). However, my pickups (DiMarzio, I believe) have 3 soldering points and underneath them goes a small metal plate that also has a soldering point. What should I do with the extra two? What are they for?

DiMarzio pickups have four conductors, not three. If you have three conductor pickups, it is most likely that the third conductor is a shield ground. All grounds, including the shielding plate under the pickups, need to be continuous. It doesn't matter where you ground the plate or shields, in the control cavity, as long as they are grounded properly.

What are the wires' colors? Pictures would help.

the wire(s) that go to the metal plate(s) has/have to be soldered to the pot housings. By this, the metal plates are soldered to ground (for hum cancelling). Maybe one of the three PU wires is an extra shielding wire, too.

Guys, thank you heaps for helping out. To be honest, I am not 100% sure they are DiMarzio pickup, I have been told they are from the guy who sold the bass to me. Anyways, [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

As you can see from the pic I get the two main points plus the one in the middle. Does that need to connect to the metal plate beneath the pickups or should it connect to ground (on top of a pot, am I correct?). Or...it doesn't make any difference?

Those aren't DiMarzios.

The shielding plate is a ground, so it doesn't matter if you connect it there, or to the pot chassis.

Cheers for that. Are you able to say what pickups they are? They look like DiMarzio and have the adjustable poles like them. They sound pretty good too! There is no branding on them though.

One more question, why would there be two ground points on the pickup? Do I ground the middle soldering point on both pickups to ground as well?

Those don't look anything like DiMarzios to me. (But I have not seen too many, from the back.) All DiMarzio pickups have four conductor outputs, with red, black, white and green wires. The third wire eyelet is also odd.

The ground on the pickup is for the pole pieces. If you don't ground them, they buzz when you touch them.

Thanks for the info. Sorry if I'm being thick here, but what you are saying is that I should ground the third soldering point too, right (the one in the middle)?
