I played acoustic guitar for 20 years and switched to bass and prefer a thinner, narrower neck - that's why the Fender Geddy Lee is perfect for me. My G&L bass has a chunky neck - my movement is much more limited and my hand kind of cramps up after awhile. I can play all night on the Geddy Lee.

precision bass - probably MIJ or MIM
jazz bass - same again, probably MIJ or MIM
epiphone ripper - big fan of death from above and i know he used to use a grabber which is similar enough for the price
olp stingray copy - i just like stingrays, altho i've never played an olp version

Have you actually played these basses?
What i have seen no one post as of yet,.... is that you need to buy what works for you....by that i mean you need to buy what looks, sounds, and more importantly FEELS good to you
400.00 in British pound notes equates roughly to about 600.00 US and 500.00 roughly equates to about $750.00 US for that amount of money there are A-lot of choices out there.
I'm NOT a Fender fan, but of the choices you posted based on looks and play-ability i would go with the Jazz, however based on sound i would go with the P bass
I suggest you really look at Ibanez and ESP both these companies make excellent instruments for the price especially ESP....for around 500.00 british pounds you could pick up one of these...

check used (maybe you could find a MM) and Also check Spector and Ibanez.
Actually the Ibanez ATK would be perfect for you, it's so growly and imagine it would be great for distortion.

and yes i have played all those basses, apart from the olp, altho i have played a MM stingray. i've played a MIM jazz bass and a old tokai precision bass quite frequently in an old church band. and my local guitar store had a ripper in a while ago, which isn't there anymore
as for those ESP's, i don't like the look of them. yes they may sound good and yes they may feel good, but in a band situation i dont think they'd look good, which i feel is important for any band, a good look. altho that ibanez does look pretty good. i suppose i like the look of 'retro' and 'original' basses, by original i mean basses that have been around for a while that are classics if you like
