I'm also in the market for an OD pedal, and had pretty much decided on the Big Muff, but then I discovered the Phat Hed - I checked some youtube demos and I think I actually like the sound of the PH more (and it's cheaper!). But watching demos and using first-hand, every day, are very different things. So... Anyone here own both? I'm curious which one really offers the most versatility and sheer awesomeness of tone over the long term.

I have a MXR Blow Torch and a Visual Sound Open road overdrive pedal on my board.
Two different pedals for sure.
If you can, check out the Visual Sound open road pedal. Very clean and versatile and not over the top.

I used to be an overdrive pedal junkie, but was never really satisfied with my tone. Of course when you're starting out there's probably any number of pedals out there that you might be satisfied with, but more lately my philosophy is to use my amps for my overdriven tones (you can still clean them up in many different various ways depending on the particular amp). In my humble opinion, I'm getting far superior tones with this approach.
I'm also in the hunt for a new OD pedal. I've managed to narrow it down to the xotic bb preamp, the mxr m80 and the humphrey badder bass monkey.
Do you guys have any comments as to how these pedals compare with regards to user friendliness and easiness to get "that right sound" out of them?

The Open Road sounds interesting. Do you have any clips on bass or know of where I can find some? I searched but to no avail.

The bb preamp and badder monkey are very similar (both are tubescreamer type circuits). I wouldn't get the m80 if I was after an overdrive. It has a lot of great features (eq and blend) but I find the overdrive itself not very pleasant (not to my taste).
From the three I would buy the bb preamp but I have never heard the badder monkey and it might be equally great.
Has anyone else used a stock Ibanez TS9 with good results? Surprisingly, I find that it doesn't suck much if any low end, and gives a nice warm mid-bump to my sound. I was pleasantly surprised. I was trying out guitar pedals I had with my new bass setup to see if any would carry over before looking to bass pedals. I also had a boss blues driver and boss overdrive that was underwhelming and sucked lows. I was also surprised to fint that the DOD 250 didn't do it for me so much. It has gotten a lot of good remarks on here, but it just didn't do it for me.
Now, since I'm so far pretty happy with my ts9, what non-tubescreamer OD's do you guys like? THe tone I'm after isn't so much grindy distortion, but more of a warmer tone right on the edge of breakup. Don't mean to hijack, but the OP seems to have found his answer, and this is as good a place as any instead of a new thread.

Sorry I do not. I don't know to many bass players that is using this pedal. But it really does work great on bass.
The VT bass and Catalinbread SFT are the first that come to mind. The Pork Loin might also get you there but I'm not sure if it is from the TS family or not.
Oh well... seems like a pedal that won't be too hard to try in a store at least.

My personal favourites are Ashdown hyperdrive and vintage rat.
I see you've been asking before about Ashdown, I have the hyperdrive version of the bass overdrive, they look identical except for 2 switches (1 for fine tune of dist frequency, 1 for +10 drive)
It's very versatile, you can mix the clean with the distorted so you keep your tone and the low-end, I have a passive p-bass, but (as someone said before) you have a input knob, so if the level is too high with your active bass you can easily turn it down. It also as a vu meter, so you can follow exactly the process.
The vintage rat is incredibly easy to use, just 3 knobs (dist, filter, volume) but it has outstanding results for the kind of sounds I like (warm overdrives, not buzzy distortions).
It loses a tiny bit of low end, but it has a distinctive and punchy sound, so you won't disappear while playing with your bandmates.

+ infinity on the Visual Sound Open Road. It really does sound incredible on bass. You can pick them up used at guitar center for like $70 bucks.
