Hey all,

So I have 4 basses - a Fender Precision, a Fender Jazz, A Mike Lull M4V Jazz, and a Stingray. I only want to keep 3 and even that's more than I actually need. I play live regularly.

That said, I will keep the P because I need the P with flats tone I get from it, the Stingray because, well, I need that Stingray tone too.

The dilemma is either keeping the MIM Fender Jazz or the Lull. I only need one Jazz bass.

- The Fender is nice, a 2019, and it's a basic Jazz bass but it's got the iconic look and color that a Jazz bass should have IMO.

- The Lull M4V is the best bass I've ever owned. Light, downsized body, Fralin pups, OBP-3 preamp, etc etc. The neck is a dream.

I feel like I'm answering my own question as I type this, but they're both Jazz basses that even to my own band mates, basically sound the same. But I could sell the Lull for three times what I could the Jazz. Don't NEED the cash, but ...

What would you do?

I absolutely love my Fender Jazz Bass, but if I’m to be honest with myself, they are extremely common… which means I could easily find another example later on if I ever decided to sell mine. The same reasoning wouldn’t apply to a Mike Lull Jazz.

Since your Lull is the best bass you’ve ever owned it seems to me the answer is clear. Keep the Lull and pass your Fender Jazz to the next bassist who will hopefully appreciate it, as well.

Okay, just remember you asked, "what would you do?".

I would keep them all.

If you are hell-bent on selling either of the 2 Jazz-style basses, there's two things to consider....

Would you rather keep the Fender because "it's got the iconic look and color that a Jazz bass should have IMO"?

Or would you rather keep the Lull because "it's the best bass I've ever owned. Light, downsized body, Fralin pups, OBP-3 preamp, etc etc. The neck is a dream." ?

If my hand were forced, I'd keep the Lull. That can't be a surprise to anyone here....

But otherwise, I would keep them both for the very reason you said about both basses.

You said that you don’t need the money. Keep them all. If one must go, decide which one you would grab in an emergency situation. Let the other one go.

It can. It has a push pull EQ knob that allows you to choose.

I am leaning this way you and others are suggesting.

Nothing wrong with that burst Jazz but I’d keep the Lull. I think you did answer your own question.

If you don't need the cash you should sell the Fender of course. Selling the best bass you've ever owned is something you would probably regret for the rest of your life, or at least for as long as you're playing bass.

Nice Lull but... Something about it is bothering you it seems like. That's how I feel about the John East pre that I have also or the Stingray 5H I once had. I sold the Stingray eventually and will one day, take out the JE.

I'll be a devil's advocate here and I I say sell the Lull.

Lull all day. You said it yourself - best bass you’ve owned. Sell the Fender and update the Lull preamp to allow fully passive operation.

It depends. And your mileage may vary. And Jaco only needed a jazz bass.
