Help Me Find a Bass! Suggestions PLEASE!

I have been doing live/studio session work for two singer songwriters for a few years now. Both of which play many times a month and both have 3 hour sets. So needless to say I need a light weight quality bass that sounds like something!

I currently play a 1997 Curbow Exotic Petite 5 string in the one project, It sounds great but is very heavy.

In the the other I use the 1989 Fender Stu Ham Urge bass . The light weight of this bass is great however the sound is just different ...Its not bad, it just needs a little more as a comparison to the Curbow
I am currently selling the 1989 Fender Stu Ham Urge bass in the classified forum to roll it in with other funds to get something more suitable to my needs.

I am ultimately looking for a 4 STRING that is LIGHT WEIGHT and of GREAT BUILD QUALITY...


I am not discounting any company, brand, or builder, because whatever brand I play, I sell the crap out of. On average I play 10 shows a month and l am also an instructor of an average of 40 students a week. And whatever brand I endorse at the time I tend to sell a lot of. I have no idea how artist discounts or endorsements work but again not discounting any brand, company, or builder. I can't tell you how many Spectors I sold when I played one.

Well, I know these are pretty cheap, but an Ibanez SR500 is a great quality bass that is very lightweight and sounds awesome with the bart mk1 pickups and preamp

Basses with mahogany or basswood body will generally be lightweight compared to most woods. Ibanez Sr series with these woods along with esp ltd B and F series with these woods would be my top picks.

Never played a bongo before.. I will look into it.
I have thought about a soundgear 4 string. Before There light and have a small neck. ..... Keep the suggestions going

Bongo's are relatively light... And have huge versatility. Of course the SR500 is a lot cheaper, and is very, very light and easy to play. Depends on your price range, is the price increase for the Bongo worth the extra features? It's up to you to decide.

The new Ibanez Premium SR1200 with Nordy Big Singles seems to have received a few favourable reviews from TBers - and with all Soundgears, they're all lightweight!

My point being I am not counting out any brand due to a snooty stigma or low end stigma simply "because". I am just keeping my options open, and looking for suggestions. I just have to love the bass.

Sadowsky - NYC models run lighter than the Metro series, but either is a good bet.

Thanks guys for the great suggestions and help. I am willing to spend some money on something That I will use a lot. I will totally check a bongo out as soon as I can. And that sound gear premium does sound like a good idea. Just need to play one. I wasn't aware that they were available yet

Every light bass I've played doesnt really sound like anything great. There are many people on this site that have played A ton basses and have great knowledge on those basses . Therefore I must ask around

So basically you want ballsy tone in a lightweight package? Can't get much beefier than nordy big singles!

Second hand Pedulla basses are ridiculously underpriced, they (many models) are an excellent studio bass, and fine live. Like (older) Curbows they are 100% hand made in the USA. I have an MVP, and it is superb.

FatAndy is spot on. Pedulla is without question the most wonderful experience, in studio and live. I've had a PentaBuzz for 15+ years and it still amazes me. Services from the master craftsman who still works on basses bearing his name.
