Since the Yamaha TBX174 matches all your criteria except it's too cheap,
you can always get it and tip your salesman the amount that brings the price up to $700.

I assume for that price it's made of cheap wood, with cheap hardware and electronics. Having played mainly on an instrument 10x the price, I would be surprised if the fit and finish met my expectations I don't expect a $150 instrument to play like a $1500 one, but I think I couldn't cope with entry-level gear. I would love to be proven wrong though.

I scrutinized the current Ibanez line-up and must admit this particular one caught my eye in its Antique Brown Stained finish. At least it's prettier than my turd-brown SRC6.

Edit : I just watched a demo video with headphones, that active P sound with a pick is beautiful.

I had one of the older SR650's, it was very similar to the current SR650E except it didn't have the eq bypass switch. Some days I liked the finish, other days I not so much. I tend to like solid colours the best. It played really nice, but it eventually got traded towards an amp.

I would love to see the Natural Browned Burst Flat in person but where I live it will be a challenge.

Yamaha are very well made in Neck and in PUPS don't let you marketizing. The price is not the sound try them before.

Ibanez is the reverse P king though. I'd look into the SR650. I can't remember if that one is reversed or not, but it's a great bass.

all in all though, I'd say fender deluxe P, Aerodyne J, or Yamaha BB

Okay. I thought it had the reversed. I just couldn't remember.

Ibanez Europe doesn't list as many Talmans as the US site. Only the TMB100 and TMB30 in a reduced set of colors. What a shame...

1. Unmostraz, I'm looking for a bass with very similar criteria (Passive P/J, thin neck). Admittedly, I don't know what the market is like over the pond so I can't comment on their availability but here are some suggestions: G&L Tribute (SB2 is my frontrunner), Yamaha BB series, Fender Jaguar Player.
