Help me finish my polystyrene cab build

Not sure how filter cutoff frequency relates to the speaker. I thought it was more relevant to the box tuning and excursion limited power handlIng v power applied.
Cutoff frequency absolutely applies to a speaker.

Speakers and electrical filters share many of the same equations, though t he variables are named differently.

So the cab is doing some interesting things, none of them bad, but some quite strange.

The box itself sounds about like a normal cab at extremely low volume, but at the full tilt of my tiny lil 50W SS PA amp(on the microphone channel which is louder than the aux one), the low end thickens up and the box itself vibrates to the touch (almost like a speaker cone driven with a powered signal). This means I can't set the PA amp on top of it or it creates an irritating buzz, but set on the floor, the issue is gone.

I have not used a signal more powerful than 50 SS watts mainly because I don't have an actual bass amp and if I put my tube combo on it it would create the same issue as the SS head and I don't have a suitable cable.

I didn't care for the sound of the Low B without a high pass filter , so I have been playing it today with my Indonesian squire P bass. I can jam on the E really hard with no complaint from the cabinet, and the roll off is pretty gentle. The E sounds as good as the rest of the bass and quite similar volume wise.

I have only tried it out in my bedroom at relatively volume, and only standing up (as opposed to on its side). My bedroom has awful acoustics, but the foam can sounds better than my 2*10 cetec Gauss 3161dsx cab.

I don't have any bass equipment that is a known quantity, like an ampeg 1*12 or something, so I am unsure how to A/B test this thing and how to make meaningful comparrisons with it. I am kind of glad I did not finish the cab as it will spend the majority of it's life in my room, and the uncoated foam seems to act like a resonator (as I hypothesized).

It sounds terrific to me, but I am surely quite biased in this matter.

The only ideas I have for testing are the obvious: borrow or rent cabs for comparison, or try to get somebody to make an IR. And the IR idea involves somebody willing to do that out of sheer curiosity, in a studio that's close enough to your home for it to be practical to move the cab.

But to me, that would be icing on the cake. You made the thing, it works, and you like the result you got. I call that a flawless victory already.

IR = Impulse Response.

It's a digital model of how a cabinet responds to a given input signal. I'm not even vaguely an expert, but I gather the method involves sticking a mic in front of a cabinet, then connecting the cabinet to a signal-generator and sweeping a sine-wave through the expected range of frequencies, at various volume levels. Inherently, it also models how it sounds through <this microphone> in <that position>, so it's good practice to do this with a variety of mic positions and, ideally, a variety of mic models.

It's how my Atomic Amplifire gets to sound like a Marshall 2x12, or an Ampeg B15, or a Vox AC30 at the twist of a knob, without _actually_ blasting my neighbours with 100 watts of... my playing.
So with an IR model of your cabinet installed, I could A/B that with the others, in as fair a comparison as you can get without actually putting them in the same acoustic space at the same time.

It would be interesting to see how listeners respond to a blind test, i.e., mic the cab, create and post an audio file, then ask people to critique the sound without telling them anything about the cab.
 
Leakage

Foam isn't rigid enough and flexes like crazy as predicted.

Needs to be braced better to overcome the flexing of the material.

Even stronger thin plywood cabinets have been reported of vibrating heads off the cabinets.

Same situation, using lighter material can yield a lighter cabinet. But it has to have well designed bracing to reduce flexing to make it work.

As far as a chode hammer lol. Kinda a reversed hammer chode.
Going back to the old saying if all else fails get a bigger hammer.
Having a Hammer Chode is basically considered not messing around and going for the biggest fattest hammer in your collection to get things done.
It's only purpose in life lol is to be the biggest and best of banging the crap outta something.

Chode is also a slang term for a short but fat male part lol
