Help me get into a band PLEASE!

OK, Here is the feedback I got. I play great but did not know the songs they play. The ones I knew that they play I didn't know the way they played them. There was no doubt that I could learn them but.....I woukld have to learn them. They want to find someone that knows the songe they play the way that they play them. Does this strike anyon else as being odd?

Depending on the market it might be a long time before they find their perfect bass player. --Kent

Hey Angus,

What kind of style of music are you auditioning for? A lot of bands are all about "the look". No offense meant here, but your look is pure country/bluegrass. I pretty much look the same as you, just the beard is trimmed shorter.

This was a country gig. The shots on stage I was filling in for a bass player in an 80's rock band.

It does sound odd. What's different about their versions? Is it a "feel" thing, is it the arrangements?

Well there is a point of contention. I played the ones I know like the radio/recordings I learned them from for other bands. They claim that they did the same. There were some differences, simple things like key which I transposed on the fly and they seemed not to know the words and had problems with the melody. What I did not know I played on the fly watching the guitarists hands. I think it was more of a feel thing.

Yeah, given this and the above fact that they had you rehearse with them for 5 hours.....I'd have to say you're probably better off spending your time looking elsewhere. :confused:

Based on what I see here, the problem sounds like them and definitely not you.

They have myspace sites under two names Overland Express and Baka Roku. They didn't sound the greatest but they have been working.

They gave me about a 22 song list and told me that this was an old song list and no to bother learning it for the audition because it is not the one that they will end up using. Then they expect me too know it. I am really confused on what they are doing. Oh well. I am talking to Salt Insurgence and hope to audition with them. They are on myspace too and I like their stuff. The singer sounds like Getty Lee and they sound fairly tight to me. The three songs they gave me were blues based rock and really simple. There is some slapping and popping in one and I told them that I don't do that and they felt that was not a problem.

Auditioning for 5 hours seems insanely un-necessary. Hell, I wouldn't PRACTICE for 5 hours with any band I've been in for the past 15 years.


Also... height, weight, appearance issues quickly dissipate 30 - 45 seconds into a show if the band truely brings it and plays like a band. The 'oh **** these guys kick ass' factor is a great great equalizer. You run into that ALOT here in the Nashville. You can wander into some place with a band and never know what kind of talent will be on stage.

+1 to the Nashville scene! I'm probably way younger, I moved here from the north in high school and came in thinking, oh geez I'm going to have to pick up washtub bass, but Lord there are good bands here!:hyper:

I hae a family room in my basement that has plenty of room to play in. I even have a drinking fountain there so we can drink all the water we need without risking any spills on the gear.

I started an ad advice thread to get input on the next ad I am going to run. If you get the chance please take a look at it and see what you think. My wife has an English degree and is going to edit it some today to shorten it then I am going to hit all of the places I can find to place this ad.

Last night I got an email from them teelling me to learn some songs they sent and contact this drummer that they used to work with he might be looking for a bassist. I guess that is a step in the right direction.
