Double Bass Help me identify my West German bass!

In Larisa, Greece, the local Conservatoire has three identical double basses made by Hofner. I spent some hours with them making adjustments and tweakings. Excellent laminate basses, robust construction, decent arco sound for laminates. They have been bought in 1959 from Frankfurt. There is also a hybrid of the same maker with the best arco sound i found from a hybrid bass. You have something good in your hands my boy!

I agree, I've got a fully carved Hofner (1983) that looks very similar.

yep, It belonged to a mandoline orchestra in Amsterdam (Netherlands)
Had not been played for 3 years. after 3 months of intensive playing she now sounds really great. She's got a killer sustain and is in perfect shape.
Had some work done on the set-up. Ajustable bridge and I got a Yamahiko pick-up that works really nice.

I guess I'm good to go for a long time.....

So the consensus is leaning towards Carl Hofner, right?
And it's plywood by the way...

Yup Hofner - I'd recognise that fake flame on the neck anywhere!

Do your bass a favour and stop leaning it on the wall like that. When it falls down and breaks the neck your school could be minus one DB...

Cool stuff man, and ya I'm seriously afraid of leaning a bass on anything, I just had it propped up like that to snap some photos quick. After that it was right back to laying on its side

It looks like a Hofner to me as well. It looks pretty well taken care of for a school bass.

Yeah definitely a middy tone, I wouldn't call it too heavy though, really about average for a ply bass...

Okay, so now I know for sure it's a Hofner. I've been playing her in an orchestra now, and she's due to the luthier for quite a bit of work. Any ideas on how much these are worth when in good condition?

Upton has one that, like mine, is labeled Anton Schroetter. They want $3.5K. I've been told mine is worth $3K. I've seen them for sale on the private market for half that.

Oh right, the same company that made Paul's short-scale electric. Exactly.

We had basses much like this when I was a kid in the the Greater Boston Youth Symphony (they were Boston University basses). I remember them being called "Roth" basses. Does that make any sense?

Wow! Surprised this thread is going on.

The bass has been through many repairs, many latenight gigs, a few symphony dates, and on many busses and subways. It's been holding up great for a working bass, and has been doing a great job so far.

I'm happy that this thread seems to be helping some people out!
