Dual core! "Intel Core Duo" and "Intel Core Solo" are names of one specific company's products.
The biggest difference in my mind between NVIDIA and ATI is in their Linux driver support. NVIDIA's is pretty good, and ATI's is awful. Intel's have open source drivers, so they are the safest. Of course, if you're planning on putting yourself through Windows this isn't an issue, but don't forget that Linux is looking better and better every day. Before long there won't be any reason to use expensive last-gen operating systems.
I like Toshiba hardware. My laptop is reliable, and the key feel is great (and this is coming from someone who usually won't put up with less than a Model M).
