Help Me With First Bass Suggestions

I'd definitely look into what some players you like are using and work with that as some baseline inspiration. Of course, nothing beats personal experience, so if it's possible for you, go to a music store and try holding as many basses as possible. Also, don't be afraid to look into 5-strings just because you're a beginner. I believe they're fairly popular in Hip Hop and RnB, though not a necessity.

I donated a Peavey Foundation to a local church, there's a music teacher that plays there and she bought a brand new short scale bass. She ended out ditching it and opted to play the donated Foundation when she's at the church. It has a very comfortable neck for her smallish hands. Well balanced, great neck, and fantastic pickups. Probably well under your price range. I recommend the first generation with the larger bridge. A fantastic first bass, that I've chosen to use over basses worth 10xs as much.

I have a Soundgear bass, very cool, very comfortable neck, and I have tried a Talman bass. Really liked it, will probably get one eventually.

For short scale I was going to offer a dark horse suggestion: Squier Paranormal Rascal. Short scale but built a bit more like a 'regular' size bass. Cool as hell, well finished, great sound. I'll see if I can figure out how to put a pic of one on here

Whoa, weird that you were getting an error. (Sorry for the unintended snarkiness of my reply; I posted too hastily, thinking you were mystified about the procedure.)

No worries, could be since I was trying from the browser on my phone but I tried several times and it wouldn't take. Regardless, you got it (thank you) and the point is it's a pretty great guitar!

The bridge is well into the centre of the body compared to a normal bass which is right near the butt end, so the Rascal will have first position further to the left than a conventional SS like a Jag. It might be a SS, but it will feel more like a FS.
