HELP!! need help on picking a new bass amp!

OP- Are you really set on the combo thing? There's some really good power amp/preamp/cabs out there that might get you even farther in the direction you want to go for the same price.

*Slightly edited for less confusion...

+1. Combos can be very cool, but they can always be very limiting.

The whole "recently replaced all the drivers in the cab" thing tends to turn me off...

And moreso if the speakers aren't properly spec'd to work in that box. Slapping anything in there is a bad idea. Would not even think twice about not buying.

If you can find one, I find the Ampeg B-100R to be a great sounding combo well within your price range. Only you could say whether or not it would hold up in the kind of gig environment you're talking about.

I also liked the Mesa Walkabout scout and have seen them for around $800 used. I like other cabs with them better, but the Scout isn't bad. If you're good going modular, I've seen used WA heads go relatively cheap - slap one on top of a decent 4ohm cab and you'll be set. I just got one and it is by far my favorite head of all time.

:hyper:Hey...since bass is all about POWER...and any good amp will give you essentially the same performance as ANY OTHER good amp (bells and whistles aside):ninja: POWER and tone shaping are the important considerations. A separate bottom is highly recommended. My personal favorite , and what I use is an ACOUSTIC B600H. Lots of power, inputs for active and passive guitars...not too expensive.:smug:Good luck

The whole "recently replaced all the drivers in the cab" thing tends to turn me off... brand new is only cool if it's really brand new.

The amp I usually suggest is the Crown XLS1000, because it's $300, 700w bridged into 8ohms, and 12lbs. Then you pair it with a used 410 or 215 cab, or a fearful, or a 2x12... Whatever cab you like, really.

The preamps then, BDDI, WTDI, Sadowsky Pre, MXR M80... They're all also a DI, so you can use them to drive your rig as a preamp, or go completely without the rig at a place with PA support. Or you can use them to drive a rig you aren't familiar with. And they are all rather good for basically any genre you can think of, with just subtle differences between them.
