help needed

Hi all

Popped into a local music shop today just to have a look at their wares and amongst the low cost usual stuff sat (what looked like) a Fender Precision 51, it looked to have an active switch and a different pickup to the one on Fender's site. Also was in a dark natural wood finish with a maple neck, white scratchplate.

The neck plate was completely blank and nowhere could I see a country of origin.

I'm really not up on my Fender RI history so just wanted some info, they wanted £150 for it, which seemed suspiciously cheap, although there were some small holes in the body (from a previous mod).

Anyone shed any light on this bass? Is it real? Why would it be so cheap? Are they any good?

if it didnt have anything on the headstock or neckplate, it could be a 60's/70's Japanese knock off...

but it was a darker wood finish.

Yes, as stated above it is a Fender (or at least the correct Fender neck), what I couldn't see was a country of origin.

Like I say the price is what raises an eyebrow, and my lack of knowledge made me curious so I am seeking help

Link doesn't work, but it looks like you have linked me to a Mike Dirnt sig, the bass in question has the single pickup as per the normal '51, not the split coil like the mike dirnt.

Also it was an unfinished dark wood, not painted black.

I may be wrong on the link as I cannot see the final outcome and am working on assumptions

Darker brown sunburst. but yeah, if it's the single coil PU, then heck, I dunno - maybe its an original vintage...how does it play/sound?

You should post pics, or heck, just scoop it up if you like it!

Plays like it needs a good set up, sounds good though.

I may pop back tomorrow and grab some snaps.
