Help on picking a bass

I'll be in the market very soon for a bass, the range will be from $800 to $2000 and I'm asking for some advise to help me to get to the best possible decision , I'll be after a 5 string preferably but not definitive... the options I have so far:

Rickenbacker 4003: read a lot of bad things happen to these basses over the time, hard to repair among others.
Carvin SB500: Read a lot of good things about these babies... maybe a good option?
KSD ProtoJ: Some says is a good bass if you install an aguilar preamp or other mods...
KSD burner: I like the look...
Fender Jazz 5 string american deluxe: Does it worth the money?

i own a rick 4003, had it since september of '08... i LOVE this thing.. it was my main bass since day 1 that i bought it, up until this past jan when i got myself a wal mk1

and if it weren't for losing my job, id keep my rick til the day i die... but if i don't pay rent, i may not have a fridge to put food in lol

i am not a huge fan of fenders, never owned 1 in the 10 years that i have been playing, BUT if i had to own one, it would be a deluxe P... they have a nice fat town that's both classic and modern... same with the rickenbacker i guess, but the 4003 has a lot more tonal possibilities and is easier to play...

just my 2 cents...

i love my ball family reserve stingray... it will be in my arsenal forever..



side note on the fender deluxe p..

if you want to hear it in action, A perfect Circle features it on almost every recording on all 3 of their albums..

For 2k you could get away w/ a Bongo but that's not quite the old school/jazz pup feel you have listed. Play one & you may change your mind.
Assuming you've played these all I would suggest MTD & Ibanez just to get a sense of what's available & what's different than a jazz-5.

Rics are not for everyone. You must play/find the right one. I would def not buy one without playing it for a while. Slow slow decision on the Ric.
Carvin & Ken Smith--very nice.
And yes Fenders are great but there are ways to pay less than 2K--namely used or lesser model you could still be happy with.

To the OP...yes...the New Fender American Deluxe 5-String J-Basses are worth it. For the style of music you are playing...I highly recommend a New Am Dlx J-Bass. It has a passive/active toggle switch so you you have a vintage passive style bass and a modern active style bass in 1. The neck shape on these 5'ers are as comfortable as any I have ever played. These are future highly sought after classics imo.
