Help understanding this Hofner bass

Heya, I was wondering if anyone could please help me understand this Hofner bass.

I’ve been on the look out for one for a while and someone I know has offered me this one. It’s a bit of a weirdo so I’d really appreciate some help figuring out if it’s worth it vs getting a new one.

From what they said they think it’s from the 70s or 80s but don’t know. It has blade pickups.

It has some quirks. As you can see it’s gone yellow around the edges and is a bit banged up.

I’d get a pick guard for it. But it looks like over the years a righty has had it with the guard as it has some holes for a right handed guard.

The neck also seems to me a right handed neck as it has the frets dots on the top of the neck on the underneath ie top of it was right handed.

The control plate also looks unusual as it seems to be upside down (prob again due to the right handed user) and doesn’t have the usual ‘bass on’ etc lettering. It looks like the tuners are non hofner too.

If I took it my plan would be to get my usual tech to give it a once over service and setup etc.

The guy doesn’t have any papers etc so no idea of its provenance. For all I know it could be an original 70s bass with its own history and story etc, or it could be something to steer well clear of for a number of reasons.

But I’m curious what you think about it? Would you steer clear? Do you think it could be a hidden gem that could shine with some care?

I don’t really know hofner basses so I’d really appreciate a knowing eye on what I’m dealing with here.

Thank you in advance!

Looks like someone converted it to RH oddly including a RH neck, then back to LH with the RH neck.
The control plate is just turned, and can be reinstalled the "left" way around (if it is e.g. an 80s German "re-issue" it may have also been swapped for an oxymoron modern "vintage" one, the bright white of the switches looks new).
As Zooberwerx pointed out, probably a post reunification RH neck (with a crack @ the LH G tuner).
They introduced the square heel, different neck joint & blade PUs back in ~1967.... and used those single coil PUs again several times up into the late[?] 90's with the German reissues.
Hofner Guitar Pickups
Some much more knowledgeable people than I in the Höfner thread might be able to figure out when the body was made.

If it’s worth it? No idea or even what they are asking. Can you test it & see how it plays & what it is worth to you? - sometimes basket cases can be sweet.... as an investment/something collectable (and not my thing), probably not.
