Like Mel said, the guys on here are worth their weight in gold. They have been a major help to me more than once. A thousand brains are definitely better than 1. Here's a topic from here that will also help on theory.

Most of all, this task you seek can be very laborious, but in the end will be worth the effort, so just take the time to embed a few things in your brain everyday. You and your bandmates will thank you for it.

I too, am humbled and envious of the theory knowledge here. I wish I could do that.

My advice -- play F minor pentatonic. If it's good enough for Jimmy Haslip, it is good enough for me.

I feel the same way. Most of the guys chiming in have been playing for a long time and/or probably have some formal music training.

I have only been playing for about 3 1/2 yrs, but I'm a very analytical person and I need to know how everything works. I know, I'm just weird like that. So, for the past couple of years I've pretty much printed up everything I could find on music theory off of the net, that's where I got all my knowledge. I have only used 2 teachers in the time I've been playing, so not a whole lot of formal training in that sense, just alot of studying on my own.
