Help with finding Bass sound-The Jam-Rick or P??

I've always loved the sound of Bruce Foxton's Bass for years and would like to get that 'sound'. Initially I thought it was a Rickenbacker 4003 (Ibanez copy then real one) however after doing some research, apparently he switched to a Fender P bass for The Jam's third album (It's this album and ones after where I want to get that Bass sound).
I would really appreciate if someone could help me, as I have saved up a decent amount of money for a Rickenbacker but now im not sure its the right bass but maybe the P bass.

P.S Apparently Foxton used Marshall head into a 4x12 amp which creates the sound i'm looking for?

Surpisingly you can cop some similar tones with a jazz and a p-bass.

The first three are a Ric. The live thing is obviously a P.

First switch to Rotosound strings. His string since the early '70s. He uses a P now but he also sounded like "himself" when he had the Aria Pro II in the '80s. Use a heavy Pick in the 346 shape. As far as tone I believe he has them fully open or only slightly rolled off.
