help with flats please

picked up VM Squier Jbass yesterday. It has flats that I'm not familiar with. They have red thread at headstock and black thread on bridge also different colored balls on end.. Sound a lot like rounds, tension/stiffness like chromes and feel not super smooth. Cobalts?? I like them and will keep them on. just curious. Thanks for help in advance.

Red and Green are the 2 I remember.

If they're gold (E) - red (A) - black (D) - green (G), those are D'Addario colors. But I can't think of any D'A strings with red-black silk ends. Must be something old and discontinued. The current Chromes Flats have dark blue silk at both ends.

Yea it's got me perplexed. I'm pretty familiar with silks on other flats. And the ball ends are those colors. Thanks for the info.

Rotosound 77 flats do fit the description by the OP - bright, stiff and not super smooth.

@hotbass57, can you double check on the ball end colors?

They're Rotosounds. I'm using them nnow.They are very smooth when sliding. You just need to break them in, though the E string feels less smooth. They're my favorite flats so far.

I have Rotosounds with red silk at tuners, no silk on colored ball ends

They're newer Rotosound Jazz 77 flats. For sure.

Feel wise they sound like the Steve Harris set from Rotosound. Don't have them or the bass anymore or I'd take a look at the colors.

Rotosounds - I bought a set recently for a new to me Aerodyne and really like them - I'm used to Chromes, I don't find them hugely dissimilar.

I agree they did remind me of Chromes sound and feel wise.

Those definitely sound like Rotos, though I've never found them very similar to Chromes at all! And that is why the saying "your mileage may vary" exists...

I find the same brand of strings are slightly different from bass to bass anyway.
