Help with my Sansamp

Thank god we can all have our own opinion . likes and dislikes etc, but playing live is a world apart from how you want to sound as the venue, gear , audience, Pa rig , supply voltage, humidity, temperature all play a part on the night regardless of what notes you play and your normal gear settings.

Yup, and no matter how perfect you can get it in the rehearsal studio, something unforseen will go wrong on the night, you've got to enjoy it all the same or you might as well not bother.

In a tribute band audience of, say, 400, at a guess 100 will be die-hard fans. Half of those will be too drunk to notice if the singer gets the words wrong. The rest are there to have a good time anyway and won't care.

There will be one or two bassists in the audience and they will reckon they could have done a better job whatever you do. You will not find either of them attractive anyway.

The best thing my wife (who also is a singer and a piano teacher) ever said to me was...

"You plug any crappy bass into whatever amp you find around, you tweak for half a minute and you just sound as yourself once again!" (fell in love after this...)

The second best one was...

"How come you sound like Geddy with an acoustic bass?" (I proposed her marriage short after this one)

I have three bands nowadays. One is my originals metal band where I compose and work my stuff with complete authority. The second is a solo artist project a friend of mine has. The third one is a cover band I lead with my wife (she's the singer). What we do there is to absolutely destroy songs in a soul/funk/bossa/r&b/flamenco way and that's the only way I conceive of doing cover material, I mean, giving it "the touch" necessary to make them hilarious although keeping them recognisable. Doing it the same as the original will ALWAYS end in poor results. I couldn't compete with The Police if I play "Synchronicity I", but they'd surely shake their heads in fear if they listen to out bossa version of it. Whoever tries to emulate Maiden's "Evil that men do" is inevitably destined to fail, 'cause they're the best at what they do, but I bet they'd die to hear our tumbao version. And so on...

Emulating is the fastest way to end up frustrated! So take it easy, man! Don't get obsessed! I even see more productive to watch him play, his technique, his groove, his touch. Just a guideline, a "sort of..." sound should be more than enough, dont you think? You have more gear than a lot of us third world bassists (I'm Argentinian) could afford in a lifetime.

P/S: And I don't hear any virtuoso player. I like Jeff Ament, Flea, Doug Wimbish, McCartney, Entwistle and even the highly bashed Fieldy! Guess what? All of them sound like no one but themselves!

I didn't mean listen to virtuoso players, its just that all this is getting frustrating, you keep shoving this opinion that Mike's tone is the best ever all I was doing was telling you to open your eyes a little listen to tones of bassist who are on lots of records while they are amazing bassist they are not doing solo flashy stuff, its just groove is more important than tone most of the time at least. If you can't groove it doesn't matter who you sound like because it will just sound crap.

You need to find your own voice and your own tone thats all. Emulation is just a waste of time.

I got to 44 with really bad manners , what the hell is trolling, is it something to do with those little hairy dolls (trolls ) ;)

Its good to see Talkbass has a sense of humour, just heard a rumour that Nickelback have called it a day and formed an Upraw covers band . Sorry got that wrong its Busted now theres a great bass player if ever there was (not ) :bassist: :crying:

Oh, I had one that turned on me one night. Very ugly scene.

By the by, you don't appear to be working terribly hard on "changing" the face of bass. You appear to be quite concerned about COPYING the tone of someone else's bass.

Well that was a waste of 20 minutes reading this entire thread...

If Nick chooses to be pathologically obsessed with another man, that's all well and good. Those of you ripping into him for it should check yourselves. I personally think the obsession will consume him and he will be found a few years from now, a well worn copy of some Nickelback cd in hand, muttering, "My Precious..." but that's okay. To each his own, at least he's improving and working, and trying to reach a GOAL...however odd it may sound to most everybody else.

Nick...I hate to say this, but the sound you're putting on the MP3's and the sound you have in your rehearsal space WILL NOT be what you hear when you take it to a band situation. I'm entirely confident that you're doing everything in your power to nail each little nuance of the guy's tone, but are your guitarists and singer spending as much effort in reproducing their respective instruments' tone as well? If you come in there with a spot-on Nickelback bass tone, and nobody else has done the same amount of work, it won't sound right. It's the nature of frequencies and band equalization.

I, for one, commend you on your drive...I don't understand why...I think there are other players (Nickelback contemporaries) with comparable, if not better, tone...and I really think you're wanting to convince everybody that you're right, and that's just not going to happen, even if you are.

Finally, one little bit of advice that my pappy once told me: Don't ask the question if you can't live with the answer.

You've been constantly disagreeing/arguing with answers given to your questions...but have you learned anything? If not, then you know it all and the question didn't need to be asked in the first place.

(everybody here owes me 20 minutes)
