Help with recording a hot output bass.

Hey guys!

I finally got my macbook pro recording situation figured out. A buddy of mine gave me his iMic to plug into the USB port so now I can record.

Issue 2:
The only bass i've kept the past couple years is my G&L Tribute L2000, it's a hot bass. I can only record it so loud with minimum settings before it starts peaking and fuzzing all over the place.

Do any of you guys have any tips for tweaking it? I'm just going for a punchy jazz tone. And I'm only using garageband for the recording.

Your bass outputs neither line nor mic levels that the imic accepts. You probably need an amp with a DI out or a DI box or a different interface that can accept instrument levels.

Some active basses have internal trim pots to adjust the output level.

Countryman Type 85 DI helped tremendously to solve my input level debacles. They can take a licking to, mine has been through hella and back and still works like a champ.
Having said that, I would probably be on the lookout for a bit better quality solution for you IO.
I use a Presonus FireStudio Mobile most of the time into my MBP, but sometimes I use the always amazing Apogee JAM.
The JAM amazes me with its clarity for such a tiny simple interface. Especially since it works equally as we'll for the iPad and iPhone as it does for the Mac.

Spend lots and lots of money for overpriced hardware in shiny cases which lack basic features.

Haters gon' hate, but my Mac works like a champ, and I know plenty of others, both professional and casual that use them without issue. If you don't like Mac products that's cool, but your opinion is fairly ridiculous in the modem world of computing. Everything just works these days. PC, Mac, Linux... They all have great solutions that work wonderfully at almost any price point.

I'm not saying they don't work. I'm saying they are selling hardware at double its price point.
And i haven't even started about their business practices... Look up Foxconn.
