Help with Wiring: Precision Bass with only 1 Tone Knob (No Volume)

Hi guys,

I've been a great fan of talkbass; I have been reading it for about 1 year now and had only recently join the forum so that I can post.

I need some help from you experts: it's regarding my precision bass. I would like to wire my precision bass in such a way that it only has 1 Tone Pot and Jack, with NO Volume pot. Can someone provide me with a wiring scheme of such wiring?

I hope you guys can help me with this. Thank you so much in advance!

Excuse the crudity, i just did it quickly in paint.

The hot wire from the pickup goes straight to the hot on the jack.

The earth wire from the pickup gets wired straight to ground.

The capacitor then gets one side wired from the hot on the jack, and the other side to the lug on the tone pot.

The other lug from the tone pot gets wired to ground.


Then, while you turn the tone pot, it'll take some frequencies from hot, and stick em to ground.

what do you mean with "totally different"? less volume? less brightness? or what else?

I never said totally different, I said slightly different :p

When the volume is at 10, you still have a connection between the signal and the ground through the pot. Some treble will bleed, the higher the resistance, the less treble will be lost - which is why a 500k pot sounds brighter than a 250k pot.

If you miss out the volume pot, you lose that stage of treble loss, so the bass will be brighter sounding.

I'm not talking a night-day difference, but it will be a difference :)
