HELP!

HIYA

I am trying to get a modern distorted heavey metel bass sound like those found in bands like, slipknot, soulfly, faith no more etc(springy, holow and lots of presence)

I know this is a peice of string question but I cant seem to get a good start point.

I have a warwick thumb 5 BO and a sansamp DI.

TA!

You're looking for the effect to get that?

Hmm, depending on the program, I'd start with the guitar effects but you'd be looking for an overdrive plug in, not distortion.

If you have a distortion pedal you are happy with, use that, mic and DI your bass.

Other than that, a lot of guys are using the EBS Valve Overdrive, Peter Iwers of In Flames does, love his bass tone, I love mine.

Typically metal bass, or most distorted heavy bass is a combination of a couple signals. There almost always has to be a clean signal blended with an overly distrorted signal so theres some bottom end. If it were me id run like one signal into just a plain old DI. Another into a guitar amp with the mids up a bit and a fair amount of grit. Another into my bass amp set for a fairly bassy sound. Another into my bass amp with a good bass distortion or overdrive in front of it. That should give you enough colors to paint with. Mix to liking.
