We just had a little girl 2 months ago, so I've stopped ALL of my playing for a while while we focus on some combination of not sleeping and caffeine intake. I'm starting to think about picking things up again before long. This would be a perfect time to get new strings on my basses, so I figured I'd entertain string suggestions as some alternative options to my normal favorites.
I usually play finger style (some pick) and often prefer a bright or somewhat scooped sound, but also with plenty of lows to carry the rumble.
I only play 5-strings:
- Ibanez SR755 with Nordstrand Big Splits and Aguilar OBP-3 preamp (34" scale length)
- Schecter Stiletto Custom 5 (35")
- Schecter Stiletto Studio 5 FF w/hipshot drop tuner (34"-36"))
...although I'm eyeing a Schecter P4 Exotic just to have a 'classic' (but not really) 4-string P bass in the stable. Also it looks

!!!
My current favorite strings are DR Lo-Riders due to their combination of clear tone with huge bottom end, tighter tension (so I can hammer the low B and have it handle drop tunings better) and longevity. I've tried Cobalts and found them to be somewhat similar to my Lo-Riders, but not necessarily 'eye-opening' enough (or I'm just oblivious enough) to switch. I've shyed away from 'regular' nickel wounds mostly because I recall them to go flat a lot faster than stainless/cobalt strings and I just don't like changing strings all the time. To be fair, it's been a hot minute since I've played nickel rounds though, so I could be making that up to some extent.
Just curious what all string recommendations you might have for each of these different basses given my playing style. I wouldn't be opposed to having some variation between basses to have them 'voiced' a little more specifically, but just curious what y'all would recommend!
