Add some compression, cut 50Hz and boost 120Hz.

If you want distortion, then that's a whole different ball game.

It all depends on what you're playing through- if it's a combo amp, upgrade that first.

Myself, I use a 5 string tuned to C C G C F so I can drop it heavier if I need to, using a fairly clean overdrive so it has the edge, but it hasn't lost the clarity. I've boosted the mids quite a lot as well as which let's me cut through quite well.
