Jimi Hendrix Owned and Played 8-String Hagstrom H8 Bass Guitar. A truly unique piece of rock and roll history, and a prize that's sure to be the highlight of any collection. The 8-string Hagstrom H-8 bass was produced from 1967-69, and has been made famous by the well-known players that have used them such as John Entwistle (The Who), John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin), Jeff Amet (Pearl Jam), Mike Rutehrford (Genesis), and Noel Redding (Jimi Hendrix). Hendrix himself used the Hagstrom H8 (possibly this very one) on the Electric Ladyland album, on the songs "1983", and "Burning of the Midnight Lamp." This bass is one of two of the Hagstroms owned by Hendrix. Lawrence H. "Larry" Lee, Jr. (1943-2007), the previous owner of this bass, was an American guitarist and singer-songwriter from Memphis, Tennessee, best known for his work with Al Green and Jimi Hendrix. Lee met Hendrix in 1962, along with bassist Billy Cox. Lee lived with Hendrix above Joyce's Beauty Salon in Nashville and played with him in a number of bands including the King Kasuals and Bob Fisher and the Bonnevilles, and in 1969 was asked to join Hendrix's new band Gypsy Sun and Rainbows. The newly formed band was hired to play the Woodstock Music Festival for which Hendrix had been previously booked to play as the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Lee had only been back from the Vietnam war for two weeks, and was unemployed when Hendrix called him, and had only joined Gypsy Sun and Rainbows a week before the Woodstock concert. Lee notes that "Jimi was a generous person and he knew I really wanted one of these unique guitars. Jimi had 2 of these at the time, a Red one and this Sunburst one." The bass (serial #723148) comes in its original grey chip-board case, with an original strap, several previously used strings, It includes a Larry Lee-signed, notarized, and laminated letter of authenticity, and a mounted 9" x 17" photo print of Jimi, holding the guitar.

The description, if it is to be believed, establishes the bass was once owned by Hendrix and given to the former owner. The seller probably safely assumes Hendrix played it, since he owned it. The biggest conjecture is that it was "possibly" used on Electric Ladyland.
The pricing is a bit optimistic. The seller perhaps envisions Paul Allen riding the winds on an electric unicorn to his doorstep and then showering him with a torrent of money vomited forth by said unicorn. I think it's unlikely to happen.
