I NEED to know how Henry got his unbelievable bass tones on "Meantime", "Betty", and " Aftertaste". I've done google searches and have come up empty. Does anyone have any insight into this subject? I know he used G&L basses, but how did he record them?

They can be aggressive if you push them hard enough. I don't know how they let that drummer continue on with that horrible snare.

Hi, I want to reactivate this thread now in 2015 :)

I bought a G&L tribute 2000 bass guitar and use it with GK 700RB-II and a 2x12" GK Neo Cab. I also have an MXR M80 DI Box. I want to get the Henry Bogdan Helmet sound with this rig, so I started trying all nodes and switches on the bass and on the amp and switched teh DI on and off but am still far away.

I still cannot get enough bottom and a dry meaty sound. When I put more bass it gets blurry, when I use more mids it gets kind of ordinary bass sound a little bit similar to fender precision...
Or should probably try a 15" Cab in addition to the 12" cab..?

Can anyone help with ideas on the EQs and presets or anything else that you think could help to get teh sound..?

Saw them 2 days ago and their current bassist David Case was using a G&L L-2000, GK 2001RB and a GK 4x12 Neo Cab. He sounded great.

Thought I would revive this just to throw out some facts if anyone is searching. I saw Helmet on the Meantime (early one) and Betty tours. Henry Bogdan played a black/rosewood neck G&L L-2000 through a Mesa Boogie 400+ with SansAmp RBI and 2x15 Mesa Boogie cab. He was using the RoadReady version of the cab when I saw them but is using the standard version in this promotional video from about 92. I've played through that same rig for about 25 years with a number of different Fender basses and it sounds amazing. I've also had both versions of the cabinet and the RR version is punchier and tighter.

Must be that extra layer of road case cover material:D. Seriously, I had one, it sounded great.
