Herrick Pickups

P Cheen

Alembics and parametric mid knobs scare me.

Just discovered Herrick Pickups (UK) last night and was pleasantly surprised at their seemingly endless MM humbucker variety.

Anybody here with testimonies on their Herrick-equipped basses?

I was thinking this thread could be a resource for the brand.

I heard these in demos and it seem to be in a class of it's own.Made in U.K. and almost impossible to find here I have twice contacted the email provided on the site to no avail.

I bought a Herrick Mutant back in August, only just now installed it on my el-cheapo Squier Affinity Jag mod project. I was hoping to find some info on other’s experience, but I looks like I might be a trailblazer. I love the varied and aggressive sounds, it’s perfect for the edgy surf band I’m using this bass with. It’s a novel idea to combine neodymium and alnico singles into a humbucker as far as I know. The bass is wired with a three position rotary switch in place of the tone pot. I never have in my life set a tone pot to anything other than wide open, so no loss for me. Now for the practical overview: Because they are handmade, expect more effort on the install compared to drop-ins like Seymour Duncan or others. For example, the cover was a little oversized, which required some selective filing around my pickguard. The electronics are not potted, and the grounding wires are only held in place by the magnetization of the pole pieces. The glue that holds the electronics in place is very minimal, and the glue separated from the cover in shipping. This added to the install effort. I’m actually taking the bass back into my luthier today because the E string does not have as much signal or LF as the others. Hopefully it’s not an issue with the magnetics. I didn’t have any issues with communication, payment or shipping from UK to USA.

Still waiting to take the bass in. Still has the issue with the E string. Another odd thing I discovered is the signal strength noticably drops when bending strings, almost as if there were four small magnets rather than one big one. This happens whether either single coils or combined.
