Hey, anyone from the "Does anyone not enjoy Jaco" thread

I feel like I worded it wrong and probably should of said it differently. I have gotten a bit of feedback. I am not trying to start any crap. I really just want to know what people think. I haven't really had much discussion with people able bass since I live in a small town where (most) people don't really enjoy the music I listen to, or if they do they don't play bass. I have had thoughts and ideas and questions that's I've been eager to get out and I apologize if I worded them wrong. I honestly really just want people to talk to about the thing I'm passionate about and I understand how people could be upset. If anyone has read any of my threads

I like Jacos playing (sometimes) not the tone or him really as a person.

I think aggressive playing is good for the music it's good for. I used to be a big fan or Fugazi.

I think Thundercat is the Jimmy Hendrix of bass, although, I really don't care for his music a ton. And no, I'm not just saying that because I'm young and am picking a modern musician.

And no, I'm not trying to make anyone upset by my thoughts or opinions. I actually want the opposite. I try to be positive on things, the threads I've started haven't really showed that. For that Im sorry. I'll post different things and word then differently. Thanks!

I also love Thundercat as a bass player. I also think his music is garbage.

Dude, you're good. You showed up at a contentious time (website reboot) and asked some questions you were curious about. This site has an interesting mix of folks who, for the most part, engage in respectful discourse (especially when compared to other online forums.)
Some of the questions you asked have been hashed out here before, and draw a knee-jerk reaction from lots of people with strong feelings on both sides. Most reasonable people fall in between the extremes and can consider some nuance. Those people are also more likely to read and listen rather than opine and rant.
It's great that you found this site, and that you're engaging. It's also great that you're considering your experiences here to decide how you want to express yourself in future postings. We're all always learning, and that's a beautiful thing.

cool. we live, we learn.
enjoy TB, it's cab be great resource for bass players and musicians of all skill and experience levels. My experience here is, if you are respectful, you will get respectful and useful responses to your genuine questions. If not ... well, you have already experienced some of that.

just out of curiosity, given your tender years, what are you doing with music and bass playing ? Are you in a band, do you gig ? do you write ? are you getting formal music training/education ? I don't think there are many here in your age group (teens), so I'm curious.

Thank you, I didn't know that the website was rebooted. That's neat I guess. I like this site it's a great outlet so far. Thank you for responding

I am developing my skills and practicing. I have been for almost 3 years so far. I started for me and my friends punk band. I soon started to out play them (respectfully) they just never cared enough (which is ok). I started listening to different music and I watch everything I can. My goal is to develop my skills until I can get formal training. There isn't much here. I have no musicians in my family. I play guitar and bass and understand a lot about music but just don't have the words to describe it yet. Another goal is to one day play in the church and to have friends to jam with. I feel confident that I will be a very good musician one day once I have someone to teach me how to read music. But it is so difficult not even understanding what key I'm in. I write down my scales, I just practice groove and all sorts of things untill I get a teacher. Anyways, thanks for asking. :)

I'll respectfully suggest that you learn your way around a piano/keyboard. It makes understanding written music and theory so much easier. At least that's been my experience.

People like what they like. I'm kind of sympathetic to your view- Jaco is a killer player. But he didn't play on many songs that I like. And I only "get" him when I'm in the mood for bass pyrotechnics. It took me a long time to recognize when I liked playing and when I liked songs. Bass is primarily an ensemble instrument. Although you can play it solo, it's primary usage is as part of a song arrangement or instrumentation.

You can get into the philosophy of what makes a great song. But part of a great song is it connects with people. Perhaps emotionally or intellectually, perhaps as an echo of the human condition. Solo instrumentation can also do that, but sometimes solo instrumentation veers into "showing off for company" or exhibition. That can be inspiring and touching too. When you see a virtuoso do things at the edges of human ability, it's impressive.

But sometimes virtuosity serves the virtuoso, not the song or arrangement.

anyway...

The Hendrix of the bass in my mind is Bootsy Collins. Pyrotechnics, sounds, effects, psychedelic genre bending.

But Thundercat is a contemporary Bootsy. So I get that.

However your issue with the player as a person- I have to separate that out. PIcasso- not a great dude, but a great artist. Miles Davis- not a great dude, but a great musician. People are flawed and if you throw out all the art by people with serious problems, well.... there might not be much left.

Well Fugazi and Weather Report are a few worlds apart musically speaking.
If you like Fugazi I’m not surprised you don’t like Weather Report although, talking about bass playing, I didn’t hear any particularly noteworthy lines of phrases played by their bass-player.
In Weather Report Jaco’s years, you can basically listen to pieces of bass and music history in almost every tune, but your hears and your mind must be open to appreciate them.

for me fugazi has lots of noteworthy basslines, thats why i got into them...awesome band.
Weather report is too much for me, otherworldly musicians, but not my cup of tea

Matter of taste.

Wow! How can you love the player and hate the music?

I may respect the skills, or the originality of a player, but if I don't like the music I won't really like the player. I think there is no point playing great bass parts if it doesn't serve great music, because we are here to serve music - not to demonstrate our skills.

I hear you man. I grew up in a tiny town - I was the only man with long hair and no one liked my type of music either. I would have loved to have had a resource like TB when I was growing up. It's so much better than the FB forums (cesspools IMO with the exception of one, which is nicely moderated) and there are decades of history with some fantastic information here to peruse. Be careful of GAS!

And FTR, when I first started playing bass, I didn't care for Jaco either, I had very long hair, and I didn't even have a bass of my own.

Now, I love Jaco, I have no hair, and I have ~40 basses. How things change!
