At this exact same moment, on some drummers online forum, there is same tread about a bassist who can't stop noodling, throwing fills in all the time, harmonics, and so on...

3 drummers in the same band? How to avoid cacophany?I guess I should count my lucky stars. All 3 drummers I play with are total professionals and I cannot relate to what the OP is describing. But, I already knew how great I've got it. It's one of the aspects of playing live I am most grateful for.
LOL
Hey bass player. You’re not Vic Wooten, stop trying to play every song like it’s an extended solo. Just hit the damn root on the damn one. Please stay below the 12th fret at all times, oh and nice quiver, I’m sure that $5k exotic wood 6 string fretless will be handy when muddling through a stones cover. two compressors, 3 preamps and a HPF oh my! Oh and stop looking over a me every time YOU drop a beat or start to drag in the bridge.
And they would be right, too, just as the OP.At this exact same moment, on some drummers online forum, there is same tread about a bassist who can't stop noodling, throwing fills in all the time, harmonics, and so on...

I'm reminded of the Deadhead drummer I played with in a blues band. Every blues song was a jam/solo, never a straight beat. It was like playing a straight blues shuffle would break him or something. I lasted one season with the guy and I was gone.
I think of a cover rock/pop song performance like writing an executive memo. It's not about demonstrating what you know, it's about giving the reader what they need to make the decision.
Same thing with cover songs, it's not about demonstrating your playing ability, it's about giving the listener exactly what they are expecting to hear. And IMHO, for most people, that's as close to the recording as you can possibly muster.
If you can’t have an actual conversation with someone in your band about how and what they’re playing, your band will fail.
And why don’t you trust me to catch on to a 4 count?
1-2-1-2-3-4 is idiotic in any context.

some shirley do!
is that a 'high calling'? asking for a friend.
could be an IQ point issue. does he say "duh" a lot? by any chance, does he slobber on himself? asking for a different friend.
seriously, @fishdude101101, why not tell the cat to stop what he's doing?tell him what to play (e.g., "a simple groove") and move on.
good luck!![]()
I'll pile on!
And please stop with the unnecessary double kick drum fills, that you can't even pull off, in songs that don't have them! It sounds like someone kicking an empty appliance box down a flight of stairs, only not as in time.
I once played with a drummer who was an insufferable Dave Weckl fan boy and would not shut up about it. Insisted that he was every bit as good as he had studied everything the guy did. We were playing a show where our opening act was a 50's style acapella group. We decided to bring them out at the end of our set to do a couple of songs with us, one of which was Rockin' Robin. Mr. I Know Everything about drums could not find a suitable beat to save his life. One of our horn players eventually kicked him off of his own kit and finished the song, much to everyone's relief, including the drummer. After a couple "I'm sure that would have stumped even Dave Weckl" jabs, we didn't hear much about him after that.
Drummers are more locked into physical routines and "licks" than any other instrument and most of them need to deprogram themselves or be deprogramed by exposure to good drumming to become "good". btw, Danny Carey is pretty musical and not just about showing off chops. Dumb drummer may be. The drummer Should be the smartest guy on stage.
They always are, throughout history! One guy who was a good influence was Joe Morello from the Dave Brubeck band. But his disciples are something else.
Over playing any instrument is rarley useful, IMO even singing. Drums though -that can really cause the train to fly off the rails.
I still like Alex though -even with his ridiculous kit. LOL

1-2-3-4 is sufficient.I'm dense, what's the issue here?

Hence the obsession with playing like Danny Carey at the expense of the song & music. Heyo!Just a total tool bag.
It’s a “get ready, I’ma fixin’ to count to 4”. I passed preschool. I can keep up, I know exactly what the 3rd and 4th numbers are after 2. Just count 4. Or better yet, 1. Or make eye contact.I'm dense, what's the issue here?
