Hi-Fi Tube DI Rec

I’m looking for a hi-fi tube DI. I want clean but not sterile with some added harmonics from the tube.

EQ-wise, if anything, a little scooped. Not looking for a DI that’s trying to sound like a B15 like a Reddi. I have a B15 and a VT Bass if I want that vibe.

I’d prefer something in the $400-$500 range.

The Radial Firefly and Demeter Tube DI look like they might fit the bill. It’s not tube but I’ve always heard good things about the Avalon too.

Radial Firefly would be PERFECT - but they aren't made anymore. They do show up on Reverb from time to time, but people don't let go of them too often. There's a reason for that. I love mine.

I have the Sushi Box Finally V2 and use it most often these days. You can run it super clean, or dial in grit if you want. It's super versatile and records very well.

Not sure if Sushi is still making it, but the Neptunium is cleaner than the the finally and IMO wider frequency range. and has bass and treble controls I do think they have a roll off and I would not consider them hi-fi as far as hifi is defined. For that I would just get a ART MPA mic preamp which also has a high Z input to fit your budget.They had US made versions also.

Sushi box is the best option for a tube bass preamp in the price range range. I do encourage to be open minded as a non tube box may be a better option

I had the Neptunium but sold it to get the Walrus Audio Mantle, which I love. The Neptunium, if you can find a used one, is a great recommendation.

In my studio I use the useful arts bf-1 although it’s a little out of your budget. I do like the many outputs. It has a through output before the preamp, and 2 outputs after the preamp one xlr and one 1/4”. The input impedance of 20 meg ohms sounds killer.

Sonically, the BAE 1073 DMP seems to be close to what you are describing. Cons: 1) it's not a tube unit; 2) it's a bit over your price goal, occasionally selling around $800 on Reverb for a pre-owned unit.
