I assume that if I played a guitar like I play my bass, I would sound like an OK guitarist. The unique contribution that I try to offer is to create on bass the types of toality presented by the great pianists, sax players, guitar players, etc.

Welcome to the board, if only for one day. One day I will take your 1-week intensive course, I know there is still more for me to learn, after all I am only 54.

Bass/Music question: Using theory, I know there are rules that can be used to select notes that fit with the chord and key being played. There is what I call "strict rules" that based on a strict intrepation of chords and keys and then there the "loose rules" where a Chicago style blues player plays incorrect 7th chords and blues scales, and a bebop player plays the bebop scales during an improvisation. My question is, how does one go about learning all of these exceptions to the strict rules and how do you choose when to play inside and outside of theory?

At this moment, I am mastering my newest CD. It is a jazz standards recording because I always wanted to do something like this, inspired by how Keith Jarrett has recorded in the last few years. It is called "High Standards" and it features my regular buddies, Richard Drexler on piano and upright bass and Danny Gottlieb on drums. It should be out in a month.
