Ok so i have a squire mb-4. The action out of the box was kind of high, but the neck had several buzzing frets after the 12th fret. so i raised the action more. This makes it realy hard to slap and isnt super comfortable to playi with. I dont want to take a squire to get set up professionally. the price isnt worth it for the bass. I havnt fooled with the truss rod, but the neck has a pretty good bow in it. Im scared if i straighted the neck a bit, my buzzing will come back. Should i attempt to "home file" the buzzing frets in order to have better action?

No, dont do that.
Give a Half turn Clockwise to your truss rod.
You mentioned your fret buzz is past the 12th fret...you probably have a forward bow. Straightening it will help the action
