I seem to have been like you and some other folk in here. Adjusted setup and strings according to what style/genre I was majorly doing.
I tried one height fits all. Started off with high action, 'cause I didn't know better LOL. Took a long time to learn low action, which I'm glad I stuck with it. I just couldn't get one general setting to work for me to my liking for some music.
So, generally, it was lower action with rounds for pop-ish type music or melodic stuff. Medium action with flats or rounds for modern country or folk stuff. High action with flats or rounds for rock, blues, older country, walking bass stuff.
Had only one bass for last ~14 years, so it's gotten readjusted/restrung a fair amount. Last two bands were modern country, medium height w/ flats. Last gig was in March, probably won't be playing anymore. Now it's high action with flats and I'm likin' it alot...for now LOL.
